Wellness Matters | Summer 2018 3 HEART HEALTH CassRegionalMedical Center announced recently that it is a recipient of the Healthgrades 2018 Patient Safety Excellence Award™ for the second year in a row, a designation that recognizes superior performance in hospitals that have prevented the occurrence of serious, potentially avoidable complications for patients during hospital stays. The distinction places Cass Regional among the top 10 percent of all acute care hospitals reporting patient safety data for its excellent performance as evaluated by Healthgrades, the leading online resource for comprehensive information about physicians and hospitals. Cass Regional is among 17 Missouri hospitals to receive this recognition. “This award signifies a level of performance, especially when compared to other health care facilities, that demonstrates Cass Regional’s continued commitment to providing safe, quality health care to area residents,” said Chris Lang, CEO at Cass Regional. During the 2014 to 2016 study period, Healthgrades found that patients treated in hospitals receiving the Patient Safety Excellence Award were, on average: w w 55.6 percent less likely to experience an accidental cut, puncture, perforation or hemorrhage during medical care than patients treated at non-recipient hospitals. w w 52.4 percent less likely to experience a collapsed lung due to a procedure or surgery in or around the chest than patients treated at non-recipient hospitals. w w 62.8 percent less likely to experience catheter-related bloodstream infections acquired at the hospital than patients treated at non-recipient hospitals.
w w 54.3 percent less likely to experience pressure sores or bed sores acquired in the hospital than patients treated at non-recipient hospitals. On average, 126,342 patient safety events could have been avoided if all hospitals performed similarly to award recipients on each of 13 patient safety indicators evaluated by Healthgrades. “This information details important insights about hospitals and their commitment to cultivating an outstanding experience for their patients, as well as their commitment to reducing patient safety events. Furthermore, consumers value this information and leverage it in order to make decisions about their care,” said Brad Bowman, MD, chief medical officer, Healthgrades. During the study period (2014 to 2016), Healthgrades’ 2018 Patient Safety Excellence Award recipient hospitals demonstrated excellent performance in safety provided for patients in the Medicare population, as measured by objective outcomes (risk-adjusted patient safety indicator rates) for 13 patient safety indicators defined by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). Cass Regional is accredited by The Joint Commission. Its designation as a Level III Trauma Center, national certification by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR) for its Cardiac Rehabilitation department, its accreditations from the American College of Radiology (ACR) for several imaging systems (the 16-slice computed tomography (CT) scanner, 64-slice CT scanner, ultrasound system and nuclear medicine camera), and The Wound Center at Rock Haven Specialty Clinic’s Center of Distinction award for clinical excellence all add to the level of safety and quality provided to Cass Regional’s patients.
